Bike Month 2021

Bike Month

For fifty years, I was a part-time model, but basically, I'm a nutritionist, a teacher, a mother.

Maye Musk

The wind in your hair, the city whizzing past, that wonderful gliding feeling…nothing could ever quite beat riding a bike. Not to mention how many health benefits riding a bike offers! What contraption deserves its own day as much as the bike does?

The History of Bike Month

The first mechanically-propelled, two-wheeled vehicle, or what could be called the father of the bicycle, was likely first built by a Scottish blacksmith named Kirkpatrick Macmillan in 1839, although nobody knows for certain. Shortly afterwards, various European inventors followed up on the invention, adding elements familiar to the cyclist of today such as the rear-wheel drive and hand-operated brakes. Modern bicycles are the most efficient human-powered means of transportation known to man in terms of the energy a person must expend to travel a given distance—in other words, thy are extremely practical. For this reason and dozens of others, bicycles have been used by people

For this reason and dozens of others, bicycles have been used by people of all walks of life, including mailmen, salesmen, police officers, paramedics and even troops. Bicycles have also greatly influenced humanity as a whole, by helping to reduce traffic congestion and both air and noise pollution. They have also been linked to significant reductions in poverty, with families’ incomes increasing by up to 35% in countries such as Sri Lanka and Uganda when there is at least one bicycle in the household. Bike Month, held in May, was created in 1956 to celebrate bikes and all the wonderful things they’ve done and continue to do for us.

How to Celebrate Bike Month

Be honest: when was the last time you rode your bike? If it was recently, or better yet if you ride it regularly, good for you—you’re helping to keep our planet cleaner and yourself healthier! Keep doing what you’re doing! But if you realize it’s been a while, Bike Month is the perfect time to get back in the saddle, metaphorically speaking, and do some good for both yourself and your surroundings.

Riding a bike regularly has been proven to increase cardiovascular fitness while decreasing stress levels and body fat levels. Riding your bike will also get you out in the fresh air, and heaven knows all of us working in air-conditioned offices 8 hours a day could use more of that! So this Bike Month, make some changes: make a habit of riding to work by bike once or twice a week, or even more often if you can. If your workplace is too far away or there’s no way for you to take a quick shower once you get there, make riding your bike a part of your fitness regime.

People do all sorts of tricky and difficult to master exercises nowadays, all in the hopes of becoming more fit and maybe losing a few pounds, and some of them do work quite well. But can you really compare sweating through your tights in a stuffy gym to gliding down a road on your bicycle with the sound of in your ears? So dust that bike off and get on it already!

And last but not least, another thing to keep in mind during this month is to get the kids involved, too—habits formed in childhood, both good and bad, tend to stick around for life. Combined with a balanced diet, learning to love riding their bikes will keep your kids healthy and happy for years to come!.

Why Do We Celebrate Harvey Milk Day May 22, 2021?

Harvey Milk Day

How to Observe Harvey Milk Day

  1. Fly a rainbow flag

The rainbow flag, also known as the gay rights flag, promotes the social and political causes of the LGBT community. It has also been called the peace flag and the freedom flag. No matter which moniker you favor, it’s a true representation of Harvey Milk who believed in equal rights for all, peace, and freedom.

  2. Read Milk’s speech “Hope”

The “Hope” speech was the speech Harvey Milk gave when he announced his candidacy, and he later gave an expanded version at the Gay Pride Parade in San Francisco in 1978. Although the speech opens with a joke, its content is serious and he believed, “You have to give people hope”. He also knew he was fighting a difficult battle for equality and rights for homosexual people. He stated, “The first gay people we elect must be strong.” Finally, he believed, “Hope is never silent”.

  3. Donate to support the Harvey Milk Foundation

According to one of the top San Francisco PR Firms, the Harvey Milk foundation was founded in the wake of Milk’s death by his nephew, Stuart Milk and by Harvey Milk’s campaign manager Anne Kronenberg, who wished see Milk’s message for equality come to fruition. The non-profit organization’s goal is to celebrate the diversity of humanity and to be sure no group is excluded from the rights afforded society on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, age, ability or ethnicity. You can visit the milkfoundation.org to find out how to support this organization.

Why Harvey Milk Day is Important

  1. Equality is still an ideal for which we are fighting

Harvey Milk ran on a platform of equal rights for all people regardless of gender, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, or race. Although we’ve made some momentous gains, gaps still remain. Women currently earn only 70-93% of what their male counterparts make, depending on the field. Transgender bathroom use is being debated state by state, and there’s tremendous controversy over the immigration ban. The fight for equality for which Harvey Milk’s life was sacrificed remains as relevant today as it was in 1978.

  2. Harvey Milk gave his life for the cause of equality

Harvey Milk knew he was risking his life from the time he began to push for equality. As a homosexual politician, he received a number of death threats. However, this did not stop him from advancing the concept of equal rights. As city supervisor, he fought against a state-wide initiative that discriminated against homosexuals teaching in public schools. Harvey Milk won that battle and formed the Castro Village Association, which became a model for other LGBT communities in the United States. Milk wanted this message to go forth: “If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door.” He gave his life for the American ideal of equality.

  3. Milk believed government represents individuals

With divisions in the country today, it is important to go back to a basic civil liberties lesson in which Harvey Milk believed. He believed that every person was important and valuable and needed representation. He believed elected officials needed to advocate for those whose voices were not being heard or who did not have a voice to speak for themselves. He promoted diversity in government, believing people needed to see themselves represented across all branches of government. He truly believed in a government by the people, of the people and for the people.

On May 22, we honor the life and legacy of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay politician in California and a leader of the American Civil Rights Movement. Time magazine included Harvey Milk on a list titled “The 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century.” Milk was not only an advocate for the LGBT community, but for all minorities. He believed in safe, strong neighborhoods and supported public education, affordable childcare, and equal rights for all.

Elected to the position of city supervisor in San Francisco, he held office for one year before his life was tragically cut short in 1978 by a political rival who opposed Milk’s liberal views. Harvey Milk’s contributions to the cause of equality for all people has been recognized in a number of ways, including the issuance of a stamp with his picture on it, the posthumous awarding of the Medal of Freedom, and the creation of a holiday in his memory. Harvey Milk Day was officially established as a holiday in 2009 when Arnold Schwarzenegger, then governor of California, signed it into law. Although Milk died, his work continues today through the work of the Milk Foundation, founded by his nephew Stuart Milk, in honor of his uncle.

Celebration World Ego Awareness Day May 11, 2021

World Ego Awareness Day

We all know someone who we would say has an incredibly inflated ego, and while we all have a very good idea of what “Ego” is, we seem to lack an understanding of just how damaging that this phenomenon can be. World Ego Awareness Day is our opportunity to spend some time in self-reflection exploring our ego, while simultaneously exploring our experiences with those around us to determine how much of their perceived ego is our own coming into conflict with others.

History of World Ego Awareness Day

The first Ego Awareness Day came into existence in 2018 with the intent of helping those who suffer from an advanced case of egoism learn to deal with the world from a more humble perspective. Egoism has some rather significant effects, including leading to abusive behavior, a blindness to the reality of situations around them, and generally a skewed experience regarding their interactions with other people.

Throughout Ego Awareness Day it’s important to help those around you be more mindful of their behavior, while also being conscientious of your own. An egoic mind can be very unhealthy and can cause all sorts of conflicts both internally and with our relationships with other people, including inferiority complexes, stress, sexism, a false sense of superiority, addictions, and a lack of empathy, just as a beginning.

The concept of the ego and its deleterious effect on our day to day lives has been well-recorded throughout history, and the elimination of ego has served as the foundation of numerous spiritual movements, most notably Buddhism. Even without the spiritual trappings, this condition has been shown to have significant impacts on peoples lives, and the lives of those around people who suffer from this condition.

How to celebrate World Ego Awareness Day

It starts with gaining a clear understanding of the Ego, and how it plays into your interactions with people around you. Egoism is a trait that can lead to us harming those around us through trying to control our imbalanced ego, as well as trying to manage our reactions to other people’s presentation of ego. While not everyone suffers from egoism, it’s likely to present to one degree or another in everyone, but World Ego Awareness Day is dedicated to those who suffer from it on a clinical level.
