Independent Retailer Month 2021

Independent Retailer Month

Do your duty in all things, like the old Puritan. You cannot do more; you should never wish to do less.

Robert E. Lee

Big Box stores like Walmart and Target are certainly convenient, offering so much of the things we need in one place, and the prices they offer can’t be beat. However, there is a section of our local commerce that brings us a local flavor, a taste of home, and makes sure that your purchases really support your local community.

Independent Retailers are our neighbors, friends, and family, whether they’re running the corner store providing gas to keep us on the move, or local craftsman who bring us the best in cheeses and handcrafted furniture, Independent Retailer Month reminds you to help support them to support your community.

History of Independent Retailer Month

Independent Retailer Month was established by Clare Rayner, known throughout the world as “The Retail Champion” to help get local communities working with their local retailers to help keep local money local. There’s been a lot of loss of culture and community throughout the years as big box companies move in and start driving the smaller companies out of business. Without being able to deal in the sheer variety of products and services, and to purchase in the sheer quantities they do and thus getting better prices, the independent retailers are in a significant amount of trouble.

The only way for them to survive is with the support of their community, and the loyalty of these people to their local businesses. Since the creation of Independent Retailer Month, millions of dollar in revenue have been returned to local businesses as people start shopping locally and discovering the hometown feel you get from shopping with your friends and neighbors.

Independent Retailer Month is your opportunity to get in and support your local community, the dream of small business is still alive and well, even with big box stores trying to squash it out of existence.

How to Celebrate Independent Retailer Month

There’s a few ways to celebrate independent retailer month, but the most prominent is getting out there and shopping at local stores and farmers markets. Don’t buy honey from some distant apiary when you can pick it up from your local beekeeper and know that it’s all been born and bred locally.

Milk doesn’t get much fresher than when its purchased from the dairy down the street, and you know that when you buy from a local store, all of that money stays in the community helping to keep the local flavor alive.

Ice Cream Month 2021

Ice Cream Month

Fraternity without absorption, union without fusion.

Wilfrid Laurier

I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream! Butternut Crunch and Rocky Road, Napoleon and Caramel Swirl, there are hundreds of flavors of Ice Cream to sample and flavor, and the hot months of the year are perfect for indulging in this fantastic dairy delight.

Since childhood this treat has defined most of our lives, with the sound of the Ice Cream man driving down the street marking some of the best moments of our lives as we ran screaming down the sidewalk, money in hand, to catch him before they got away.

History of Ice Cream Month

Ice Cream Month was established by the American Dairy association in conjunction with President Ronald Reagan and Walter Dee Huddleston, a Senator from Kentucky. On the backs of this incredibly official declaration, the Ice Cream companies began publicizing the day, encouraging people to go out and enjoy this cold delight as often as possible during the month of July. Ice Cream was first said to be created in Ancient Greece, before the idea of a refrigerator ever came to pass. The so-called “Ice Cream” was incredibly rudimentary, being a mixture of snow honey and fruit, but it was still the beginnings of a great tradition.

The first true Ice Cream was said to be introduced by Catherine de’ Medici in the 16th century. So impressed was Charles I of England (one hundred years after this introduction) that he paid to keep the formula secret, making ice cream a royal prerogative, utterly unobtainable by the common man. The first recorded recipes didn’t exist until the 18th century.

Truly Ice Cream was a treat meant for the most notable of humans, and now we can all enjoy it any day of the year! Ice Cream Month encourages us to be particularly indulgent during the month of July!

How to Celebrate Ice Cream Month

Ice Cream Month has only one appropriate celebration, gorge yourself on Ice Cream at every opportunity! Ok, ok, moderation is necessary even during Ice Cream Month, but there are a bunch of different ways you can enjoy this delicious treat. It goes great with a warm apple pie, and nothing compliments a brownie better than vanilla ice cream. Maybe you prefer a nice scoop of strawberry doused in caramel topping, or that most amazing of all ice cream treats, the Ice Cream Taco!

You can even take the time to make your own ice cream during Ice Cream Month and enjoy the fruits of your labor on a hot summer evening!

To celebrate Ice Cream Month, we have special activities and deals!

Why Do We Celebrate Pandemonium Day July 14, 2021?

Pandemonium Day

Pandemonium Day Activities

  1. Throw a Pandemonium Day party

Invite your friends over for a party, and when they ask what to bring, say, “Whatever you want.” Serve food from totally different cuisines, make a playlist from every genre you can think of, don’t plan any activities and just see what happens. After all, nobody ever said “I wish that party had more rules.”

  2. Read Up on Chaos Theory

If you want to get academic with your pandemonium, today’s a great day to brush up on the fascinating study of Chaos Theory. While most of science and mathematics deals with predictable outcomes, Chaos Theory exclusively applies to elements of nature that are impossible to predict or control (like the weather).

  3. Reorganize

Is there some part of your life that desperately needs reorganizing? Your kitchen drawers? Your desk? Your closet? Create some pandemonium by laying everything out in no discernible order, and then come up with a new system to put everything in its proper place.

Why We Love Pandemonium Day

  1. We get to embrace the chaos in life

Chaos often seems like a bad word, but it doesn’t have to be. Pandemonium Day is a day to throw up your hands and accept the chaos that is always trying to creep into the order of your day-to-day life. Turn off your alarm, don’t schedule any meetings or appointments, don’t plan anything—not even what you’re going to have for lunch. Just see what happens!

  2. It celebrates spontaneity

Another great reason to embrace chaos is by being spontaneous and giving in to all of your impulses. Within reason, of course! We’re not telling you to break the law, but is there something you’ve always wanted to try that you thought was too “out there”? A cooking class, even though you can barely make scrambled eggs? Auditioning for a band, even though you only sing in the shower? Skydiving, even though you’re afraid of heights? Today’s the day to let those impulses carry you.

  3. We get to master chaos

If you frequently feel overwhelmed by the pandemonium in your life, this is a great day to come up with methods to overcome it. For some people, yoga or meditation is a great way to look inward and create peace of mind that’s required to cope with any number of chaotic scenarios. For others, creating to-do lists and organization systems is much more effective when preparing for the unpredictable. Either way, take Pandemonium Day to say to yourself “chaos is inevitable, but I can handle it.”

Ready to dive into all things unpredictable on Pandemonium Day this July 14? The word “pandemonium” first appeared in the 17th century, in author John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost, which re-tells the biblical story of Adam and Eve and their temptation by Satan. It’s a hybrid of the Greek word “pan,” which means “all,” and the Latin word “daemonium,” which means “demon.” In Paradise Lost, Pandemonium is the capital of Hell, where all the demons live. These days, however, it doesn’t have such scary implications — pandemonium stands for all things chaotic, disorganized, and unpredictable. If you feel like you’re stuck in a rut where your life is too orderly, too scheduled out, too boring and predictable, this is a great day for you to throw the rule book out the window! Let’s be honest: we’ve all had the thought, “There’s something I’d really like to do, but it just seems too crazy for me.” The great thing about Pandemonium Day is it tells us to go ahead and do it anyway. So nix the itinerary, cancel your appointments, rid yourself of expectations and read on for the best ways to get wild and celebrate Pandemonium Day.

Why Do We Celebrate First Day of NAIDOC Week?

First Day of NAIDOC Week

Everybody in the world knew who I was before I knew who I was.

Michael J. Fox

How to Observe First Day of NAIDOC Week

  1. Listen to Indigenous music

Acquaint yourself with the Indigenous music of Australia throughout NAIDOC Week. The soothing sounds of this style of music are sure to whisk you away to a different time and place.

  2. Play with a boomerang

What better time to head outside with a friend and throw a boomerang around than during NAIDOC Week? We have the Aboriginal people of Australia to thank for the invention of the boomerang, so grab a friend and honor a piece of Indigenous history.

  3. Take a field trip

NAIDOC Week is a great opportunity to finally see important indigenous sites that have influenced Australian history. You don't have to be geographically near them to explore; you can also take a virtual tour online!

Why First Day of NAIDOC Week is Important

  1. It's a time to celebrate Australia's Indigenous people

It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, but NAIDOC Week encourages slowing down and appreciating Australia’s aboriginal and islander communities and their many accomplishments. In the past, these communities didn’t receive the love they deserved, so it’s important to recognize what a pivotal role indigenous people have played throughout Australia’s history.

  2. All Australians are welcome to participate in NAIDOC festivities

Most Australian town and cities organize events that recognize NAIDOC Week, and you don’t have to be of aboriginal or islander descent to be a welcomed guest. There are a ton of ways NAIDOC week is celebrated throughout each community, and all Australians are encouraged to find an event that suits their interests.

  3. Awards for outstanding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are handed out

It’s important to acknowledge outstanding citizens, and many communities throughout Australia hand out awards to inspirational Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander citizens throughout NAIDOC Week. Award categories include Person of the Year, Youth of the Year, and Scholar of the Year.

The first day of NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) July 5 Week kicks off the seven days of festivities that celebrate the culture of the native people of Australia. Ironically, though it’s now a time of celebration, NAIDOC Week originally started as a time for protesting. In the 1920s, Aboriginal rights groups came together to boycott and draw attention to their rights. However, around 1955, the week officially adopted a celebratory tone. Now, it’s a time to enjoy live Indigenous Australian music, art competitions, and storytelling.

To celebrate First Day of NAIDOC Week, we have special activities and deals!

Why Do We Celebrate National Ice Cream Month July 2021?

National Ice Cream Month

National Ice Cream Month Activities

  1. Host an ice cream party

Next time you're having a barbecue this summer, add an ice cream bar! You can do it potluck style—supply several different flavors of ice cream and ask your friends to bring their favorite toppings. You might not be the life of the party, but your dessert will—and that's what counts.

  2. Try as many ice cream flavors as you can

How many ice cream flavors can you eat this month? We challenge you to try at least 10, but you can set your own goal and see how well you do. We know we'll be aiming for the moon—try and keep up!

  3. Invent your own flavor

To celebrate everyone's favorite month, find a recipe you can use as a starting point to invent your own ice cream flavor. You can use a vanilla ice cream recipe and add your favorite toppings, or just pour ingredients into a pan and wing it. If you have an ice cream maker, this is your time to shine. If you don't, there are plenty of recipes that you can make without any equipment!

Why We Love National Ice Cream Month

  1. It's the perfect excuse to eat ice cream

We're always looking for reasons to eat sweets—and with summer here, what better treat than a frozen one? This holiday gives us the perfect opportunity to eat as much ice cream as our heart desires. And believe us, our heart desires a lot.

  2. It pushes us out of our comfort zone

When we treat ice cream as a rare delicacy, we always order the same flavor. We go with what we know, because we're not sure when we're going to have ice cream again. However, when we have the opportunity to eat it every day, we don't have to play it safe. Cookies and cream begone—we want to try flavors like thai tea and taro.

  3. It's a gateway to other desserts

The most beautiful thing about ice cream is how many delicious desserts it can go on top of. Brownie with chocolate ice cream? Yes please! Pie with a side of vanilla? Pile it on us. This month is a great excuse to eat lots of desserts—as long as they involve ice cream, they're fair game.

This July is National Ice Cream Month, and you have Kentucky to thank! In 1984, Senator Walter Dee Huddleston of Kentucky introduced a resolution to proclaim the month of July 1984 National Ice Cream Month and the 15th of that month National Ice Cream Day. Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law the same year, and the rest is history! Even though the bill only specified that July 1984 was National Ice Cream Month, the tradition carries on—much to our pleasure. Celebrate with us this July!
