Isn’t it a shame to waste your day off feeling sick? When you finally get some time away from the monotony of the office, isn’t it better to actually enjoy it? Of course it is! And that’s the thinking behind ‘Stay Home Because You’re Well Day’.

History of Stay Home Because You’re Well Day

Thomas and Ruth Roy created Stay Home Because You’re Well Day under the name of Wellcat Holidays and Herbs. They have stated that it exists so that, “we can all call in “well,” instead of faking illness, and stay home from work.” The point of this holiday is to take a moment to just slow down and enjoy life, seeing as how it has become so very hectic over the recent years, what with the endless barrage of phone calls, text messages, emails, voicemails, etc. that we are faced with on an everyday basis. And who can argue with that?

How to celebrate Stay Home Because You’re Well Day

One of the more important things to remember when deciding to celebrate Stay Home Because You’re Well Day is to be careful and use good judgment and when announcing this to your boss. Some bosses are understanding enough to not take issue with your honesty and your need to just get away from it all every now and then to recharge your batteries, but some could become very agitated. And you wouldn’t want to get in trouble with your boss or lose your job now, would you? So before you decide to participate, think about whether this day is right for you, your line of work, and your boss’ temperament and tolerance for new ideas. If you do indeed decide to celebrate Stay Home Because You’re Well Day, think ahead about what you will do on that day.

Do you feel tired, like you have not been getting enough sleep lately? Take a large part of the morning to finally get a good sleep. Have you been eating takeout or TV dinners for weeks or even months because you haven’t had the time to cook properly? Ask your mother or grandmother for a simple, healthy dinner recipe, and treat yourself and your family to something that is both nutritious and delicious. Have you been neglecting exercise? Go for a bike ride in the park or a long walk with the dog, or hit the gym or the swimming pool—whatever you do, make sure it helps you feel rested and refreshed, and ready for another day.

Have you not had time to actually read a book in ages? Buy that book all of your friends have been recommending, curl up in the sunlight with a cup of tea and allow yourself to be drawn into the world the book creates. Or perhaps you feel like you’ve been neglecting your partner because of ll of your work-related responsibilities? In this case, it would be best if both you and your partner could celebrate Stay Home Because You’re Well Day by taking this day off and spending it together. Make a delicious breakfast together and wash it down with some freshly brewed aromatic coffee, and then do whatever you like to do best, be it wandering around all of the most charming streets of your city, having a picnic in the park, or going to a movie, opera or musical. In the evening, you could prepare a romantic candlelight supper to enjoy each other’s company to the fullest all day long.

In countries all over the world, new people have travelled from their points of origin the inhabit land that previously belonged to others. While we call the Americas the “New World”, the culture and history of that country was anything but new when it was first discovered by Europeans.

The relations between their new neighbors (who quickly made themselves unwelcome) were tenuous and then tumultuous, until the culture of the country’s first inhabitants were nearly forgotten. Native American Heritage Month honors those who remain and serves as a reminder that the culture is far from dead, it’s still alive and breathing in the descendants of the First Americans.

History of Native American Heritage Month

The history of Native American Heritage Month goes back a surprisingly long time, even without considering the hundreds of years that Europeans have imposed themselves on the New World. The first inklings that such a day may come to pass occurred back in 1915 when Red Fox James, a Native American of the Blackfoot nation, took it upon himself to ride a horse from state to state seeking approval from 24 separate state governments for a day to honor the “American Indian”. In December of that year he presented it to the White House, apparently to no positive effect.

It was George H. W. Bush who officially took the steps to push forward a joint resolution that made November of 1990 the first official Native American Heritage Month. Multiple proclamations have been made since each year following 1994. Since then cultural sites, museums, and native tribal councils have organized events showcasing their rich and diverse culture and history so that it might be spread to the young and continue to thrive.

How to celebrate Native American Heritage Month

Celebrating Native American Heritage Month involves taking the time to recognize the rich diversities of the cultures that existed in America before it became the world power it is today. There are hundreds of tribes across the nation, but most people are only capable of naming a few, and even fewer are represented in the media of the day. If you live in the Americas, Native American Heritage Month is a great opportunity to research your local history and discover which tribes called the land you now live on home.

Then go on to find out what local tribal communities they are near you, and what sort of activities they present as part of their history during Native American Heritage Month. Visit, learn, and take it all in to honor this still living culture.

Square Dancing Day exists to celebrate the square dance form of folk dancing, and is a great excuse to get out and “Dosey Do”. This fun, healthy and simple form of dance with a long history definitely deserves a holiday all of its own, and it has one!

Learn about Square Dance Day

To understand the importance of Square Dance Day, you first need to learn about the square dance itself! This is a type of dance that involves eight people in total who are split up into four different couples. Each couple is arranged into a square, with one couple at each side, facing the middle of the square.

This dance has progressed a lot throughout history and it is popular in many different parts of the world. These dances were first documented back in the 16th century in England. However, they were also popular in other parts of Europe and they have become a part of American history as well.

When you consider the impact that this dance has had, it is of no surprise that we have a Square Dance Day to celebrate it! On this day, we celebrate this traditional dance and we raise awareness about it as well. This is the perfect chance for you to get your dancing shoes on and try out this dance with some friends and loved ones. Whether you go to a dance class or you simply practice from the comfort of your own home, it does not matter so long as you are moving!

History of Square Dancing Day

Square Dancing has its roots in traditional English, Irish and Scottish folk dance. Square dances were first documented in 17th-century England. They came to North America right along with the European settlers, where they were modified and improved over the years. The Western American square dance is perhaps the most famous type of square dance worldwide; in fact, the square dance is the official dance of 19 American states.

Square dancing is mainly associated with a romanticized image of the Old West, and cowboys wooing Southern belles during dances organized at saloons to celebrate various occasions. The dance is accompanied by jolly, lively music on guitars, fiddles, accordions and bagpipes.

The dances normally form patterns of lines, circles and, as the name suggests, squares, with couples – male/female, female/female or male/male – taking a turn in every role. In most American forms of square dance, the dancers are prompted through the square dance choreography to the beat of the music.

Sometimes, this so-called “caller” is one of the dancers, but more commonly the “caller” is found on the stage with the band. Interest in square dancing, which had waned during the World Wars, experienced a revival in New York City in the 1950s, during the American folk music revival.

How to celebrate Square Dancing Day

In short: learn it! Go to a dance school with some friends or try on your own at home. If you and your family or friends do decide to try at home, it may not work out very well at first, but that doesn’t mean the time will be badly spent—the laughs and food and drink you could prepare to go along with the evening can easily more than make up for your mistakes and stumbles.

There are many reasons why this dance is so popular—thanks to the caller telling you what steps to do next, it is easy to learn, lively, and a great chance to meet lots of new people to have fun with! The atmosphere is usually relaxed and relatively amateur, meaning that even those who have always felt they have two left feet can join in and enjoy themselves. Exercise, music and fun – get them all by going along to a celebratory Square Dance Day party!

An alternate way to celebrate could be to watch Winona Ryder’s 1987 film, “Square Dance” about a young country girl who suddenly finds herself thrown into the realities of the big city. At first, she is happy to run away from the small town she comes from, but eventually begins to miss the simple life.

The movie earned a Golden Globe nomination for the outstanding performance of Rob Lowe, who played an intellectually disabled friend of the main character, and is definitely worth a watch on this day. Another reason the film is noteworthy is that one of the “members of the Bayou band” in the film, the then near-anonymous Trace Adkins, later went on to become a country star with numerous countrywide hits.

You could also spend some time on Square Dance Day learning about the different types of square dances that are popular around the world. For example, in England, there are a number of different examples of square dancing. Ceilidhs will often incorporate square dances. Plus, square dances are also popular in a lot of English country or folk dances too. You can then learn about the different dances in continental Europe, Ireland, Canada, and of course, the United States. It is certainly interesting to learn about the different dancing traditions, and if any of them tickle your fancy you can always give them a go yourself on Square Dance Day.

You may decide to get the entire community together and make an occasion of it. You could hold a competition, with the best square dancers getting a prize. There is nothing wrong with a little bit of healthy competition, right? Plus, dancing is great for bringing people together, which is what communities should be like! Don’t forget that no square dance is going to be complete without some music for the day. Scottish and Irish dances tend to be done to traditional tunes.

This can also be the case in England, although there is often experimentation of different musical styles, especially at ceilidhs. When it comes to American square dancing, different types of music are used depending on the square dance being carried out. One thing that can be for sure, though, is that live music is pretty much essential for a traditional square dance, so do keep this in mind. The only other thing you need to do is make sure there are plenty of snacks and drinks for people to enjoy and you will have the perfect event for Square Dancing Day.

They dangle from their tree like jewels, and when split open reveal within a treasure trove of burgundy delight, little bursts of flavor wrapped around seeds that promise endless seasons more of their luscious flavor.

Such was the seductive power of the pomegranate that Persephone, warned by her mother not to eat of anything offered to her by Hades, indulged in six seeds that locked her forever into a seasonal dance with him. Pomegranate Month recognizes the power in these delightful and unique fruits, and everything they’ve brought to both mythology and the culinary world.

History of Pomegranate Month

The Pomegranate has been with us for a very long time, stretching back through history to its first recorded appearance in Ancient Egypt, where it was used for the treatment of various infections and even tapeworm. We can then see it in Ancient Greece where it was considered the fruit of the dead, and was associated with the Hades and Persephone myth, where her consumption of six seeds led to her spending half the year locked in the land of the dead.

Pomegranates are more than just a simple fruit, they’re packed of Vitamin C, dietary fiber, folate, and much more. They’re truly little treasure-troves of health and nutrition, with a reputation for being something of a miracle cure.

Such was its popularity that POM has used it as the foundation of its entire product line, citing anti-inflammatory, anti-disease, and anti-oxidant properties as just a few of its benefits. Such wonderful rich and beautiful fruit deserves a celebration, and that’s what Pomegranate Month brings it.

How to celebrate Pomegranate Month

Pomegranate Month is best celebrated by emulating Persephone and indulging in the decadence that is the Pomegranate. There are endless ways of enjoying the pomegranate, from simply feeling the delicious burst of each juice enwrapped seed as you pop them between your teeth, to a full and rich glass of the glimmering juice.

You can even choose to enjoy them in some cultural favorites, including ash-e anar, a soup from Persia that is based in the juice of this delicious plant. Want something to carry you through your day while providing a tart explosion? Buy them dried and mix them into your trail mix or snack on them throughout the day.

Why Do We Celebrate Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving Activities

  1. Volunteer

Before sitting down to enjoy a nice warm meal at home, invite the family to join you to serve the community by volunteering at a local shelter. It's a great way to give back to those less fortunate and provides an opportunity for the whole family to do something good.

  2. Bake a pie

Pies are a one of the classic Thanksgiving staples. Pecan, pumpkin, apple, cherry — you literally cannot go wrong. Preheat the oven, throw on an apron, and get cooking!

  3. Start a take-out tradition

Cooking a Thanksgiving meal can take hours. Lots of restaurants serve Thanksgiving dinners. Or start a new tradition by ordering take out! It can be the Chinese restaurant down the street, Indian curry, even your favorite pizza place. And tip well! The day is all about being grateful.

Why We Love Thanksgiving

  1. The food

Traditional Thanksgiving dinners generally includes turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, buttered vegetables, warm pumpkin pie, and other indulgent foods. But honestly, anything goes as we approach the 2020s. Vegan’s just fine too.

  2. Family and friends

Thanksgiving is a time when friends and family gather to express gratitude. For some people, it's an occasion to be with family you don't see often. For others, it's a time to get all their friends (Friendsgiving!) together for food and fun.

  3. 4-day weekend

Americans look forward to their extended holiday weekend right around the time Halloween ends. Thanksgiving Day starts a mini work/school vacation that also includes Black Friday and Small Business Saturday.

What is Thanksgiving?

America’s Thanksgiving holiday, born in the 1500s, mythologized in 1621, and observed even during the bleakest hours of the Civil War, now stands as one of the nation’s most anticipated and beloved days — celebrated each year on the fourth Thursday in November (November 26 2020). Perhaps no other nonsectarian holiday has more tradition. Family, friends, food, and football have come to symbolize Thanksgiving — a rare celebratory holiday without an established gift-giving component. Instead the day urges all of us to be grateful for things we do have.

History of Thanksgiving

This story doesn’t necessarily start with Pilgrims.

Evidence shows that Spanish explorers and settlers held thanksgiving services during the late 1500s in what is now Florida and New Mexico. Thanksgivings also took place in what became the Commonwealth of Virginia as early as 1607, with the first permanent settlement of Jamestown holding a thanksgiving in 1610.

The ‘First’ Thanksgiving

It wasn’t until a decade later that the Plymouth settlers, known as Pilgrims, arrived in the New World. They celebrated at Plymouth for three days after their first harvest in 1621. The gathering included 50 people who were on the Mayflower (all who remained of the 100 who had landed) and 90 Native Americans. The feast was cooked by the four adult Pilgrim women who survived their first winter in the New World, along with young daughters and other servants.

Revolutionary times

During the war the Continental Congress appointed one or more thanksgiving days each year, each time recommending to the executives of the various states the observance of these days in their states. George Washington, leader of the revolutionary forces, proclaimed a Thanksgiving in December 1777 as a victory celebration honoring the defeat of the British at Saratoga.

The Continental-Confederation Congress, the legislative body that governed the United States from 1774 to 1789, issued several “national days of prayer, humiliation, and thanksgiving.” This would eventually manifest itself in the established American observances of Thanksgiving and the National Day of Prayer today.

In 1789 New Jersey congressman Elias Boudinot proposed that the House and Senate jointly ask President Washington to proclaim a day of thanksgiving for “the many signal favors of Almighty God.” Washington then created the first U.S. government-mandated Thanksgiving Day. It read in part: “Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of thee States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be.”

The holiday would remain inconsistent for decades.

Civil War

President Lincoln, the war, proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day in 1863, to be celebrated on November 26 — the final Thursday of the month. Secretary of State William H. Seward wrote the proclamation that read in part:

“In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict.

“I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.”

The U.S. has observed Thanksgiving ever since.

Future presidents followed Lincoln’s example of annually declaring the final Thursday in November to be Thanksgiving. But in 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt declared November’s fourth Thursday as Thanksgiving rather than the fifth one. FDR thought an earlier Thanksgiving would give merchants a longer period to sell goods before Christmas — and help bring the country out of the Depression. A 1942 law — making the fourth Thursday a federal holiday — has stood ever since

Statistics Thanksgiving 2021

Thanksgiving Statistics

57% of people will spend Thanksgiving at home this year

Whether they’re hosting or unable to make it out to see the rest of their family, 57% of Americans will be celebrating Thanksgiving in the comfort of their own home. It’s not easy being the Thanksgiving host: you have to prepare all of the dishes that no one else claimed, make sure there’s plenty of space to hold all of your guests, and hope that people will stay afterwards to help clean up (we’re thankful for you, clean up crew)! So if you’re hosting this year’s Thanksgiving get together, be strong — the wave will be over soon! And if you’re unable to make it to your family’s place for the holiday, then you can always prepare your own miniature Thanksgiving meal right at home.

88% of Americans eat Turkey for Thanksgiving dinner

The tradition of eating turkey for Thanksgiving is as American as….well…the apple pie you’ll probably eat right after the turkey (pumpkin and sweet potato are also great choices). It’s so apart of Thanksgiving in fact, that even some vegan/vegetarian participants might throw in a specially made tofurkey to not stray too far from tradition. A perfectly cooked turkey takes hours, patience, and lots of hoping that it doesn’t dry out! Your turkey can make or break the entire Thanksgiving meal, so it’s best to be prepared and get your timing right…no pressure.

4% of people travel to have Thanksgiving with their friends

There’s the family that you’re born with and the family that you choose, and sometimes you might have a better relationship with the latter than you do with the former. But family is what you make it, and traveling to spend Thanksgiving with good friends, good laughs, and good company is essentially what the holiday is all about. We’re thankful for the friends who always have our backs no matter what and support us through life’s ups and downs. Here’s to you and happy Friendsgiving!

Epilepsy is a poorly understood condition, despite the fact that it is the 4th most common neurological disease. Statistics show that 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy in their lifetime. Although epilepsy is prevalent, public awareness is low, and many people are unaware of the symptoms and signs of epilepsy and how it impacts sufferers.

November is Epilepsy Awareness Month. The aim of this campaign is to get people talking about epilepsy and raise awareness of a condition that affects thousands of people across the world.

The reality is that epilepsy can affect anyone, and learning about epilepsy and Epilepsy Awareness Month equips people with the knowledge and insight to support campaigns and assist those who display symptoms of seizures.

Epilepsy can impact anyone, and there are currently over 3.4 million people living with epilepsy in the US alone. Globally, epilepsy is considered the most common severe brain disorder by the World Health Organization.

History of Epilepsy Awareness Month

Epilepsy Awareness Month has been celebrated since 1969, and in 2003, the US Congress confirmed that November would be Epilepsy Awareness Month. The campaign has grown rapidly and is now celebrated across the world.

Initially launched to enable people to understand more about the condition and how it affects day to day life, more recently, the campaign has focused on preventing discrimination and eliminating myths and perceptions that permeate public thinking.

Over the years, more and more organizations have signed up to support Epilepsy Awareness Month, and this trend looks set to continue.

Epilepsy is a neurological condition, which is characterized by seizures, which cause involuntary movements, shaking, confusion and anxiety. Seizures vary, and coming across somebody who is having a seizure can be terrifying, especially for those with limited knowledge about epilepsy. This is why campaigns like Epilepsy Awareness Month are so important.

How to celebrate and get involved: What you can do.

There are myriad ways to lend support to Epilepsy Awareness Month. Events take place all over the world to raise awareness of epilepsy and generate funds for charities and organizations that support epilepsy sufferers.

From sponsored walks and bake sales to dress-down days at work, there are plenty of ways individuals, communities, businesses, and schools can celebrate the event.

The color purple is also commonly associated with epilepsy, so wearing purple clothes and decorating rooms and public spaces with purple banners and balloons is also a great idea.

Another brilliant idea is to get involved in courses and workshops that provide information about the condition and basic first aid training. Many people wouldn’t know what to do if they came across a person having a seizure in the street, and one of the most crucial aspects of the campaign is to encourage the public to learn how to react in this scenario.

Cities, towns and small communities can celebrate Epilepsy Awareness Month by lighting up landmarks in purple. Social media is also an excellent platform for sharing and liking posts about epilepsy and generating a buzz around fundraising events.

What is National Peanut Butter Lover’s Month?

This November, we are excited to celebrate National Peanut Butter Lovers Month — the perfect time to satisfy all of your peanut butter cravings. We love this creamy and sometimes crunchy concoction so much we need an entire month dedicated to our affection for this delicious delicacy. We’ve collected some fun peanut butter facts and ideas that are sure to help you celebrate to the fullest.

History of National Peanut Butter Lover’s Month

The invention of peanut butter has long been falsely credited as belonging to George Washington Carver, who was an inventor and also a scientist determined to improve the welfare and nutrition of America’s farmers. This is partly because Mr. Carver was a huge proponent of peanuts as a source of protein and energy, and created a list of foods and recipes for farmers to use that were centered around peanuts.

But Carver did not actually invent peanut butter. By the time he was advocating for peanuts as a supportive, alternative crop (around 1916), peanut butter had already been popularized. In fact, in 1840 a New Yorker named Rose Davis started making peanut butter after her son saw Cuban women grinding the nuts and spreading them on bread. Additionally, evidence has surfaced that Aztecs may have even done something similar as early as the 15th century.

But, the first person credited with creating peanut butter was a French-Canadian man named Marcellus Gilmore Edson, who created it in 1884. Fourteen years later, Kellogg (the man of cereal fame) created the first streamlined process to mass produce the product and it was quickly considered a snack for elite society members as it was served as a protein source in wealthier hospitals. Since then, it’s grown to be more widely available, with PB&J becoming the official sandwich of, well, everyone who wants a quick, affordable, and protein-filled snack.

Have you ever wondered what it was like before the idea of civilization in the modern sense came to be? Then take some time to learn about the lives of the people that were in the Americas long before the settlers came to discover them.

History of Native Americans

President George W Bush passed a Law in November of 2008 creating this opportunity to the First Peoples that are native to these lands, It was also backed by the National Indian Gaming Association to be recognized by the Native tribes in the United States. It is a way to celebrate and give thanks for the contributions that the Native Americans have given to the United States of America throughout the years.

From the land that we share to the customs that have been passed down to each generation.  There are some things that should not be forgotten, help with the wars that were fought to keep this land as well as to keep the oppression from foreign countries and governments. Also learning the items that were traded and how to survive in a new and hostile environment.

There is a darker side to this day though some are not willing to look at it, it is the recognition of the lives that were lost when the settlers came to what we now know as the United States.

How to celebrate Native American Heritage Day

There are many ways to celebrate such a day You can learn about your local Native American Tribe. They have a rich history in the land that we inhabit. What is National Adoption Day?

National Adoption Day is celebrated every November 23. Did you know that last year alone, 4,000 adoptions were finalized on the Saturday before Thanksgiving? Events are held all over the country to celebrate this holiday — during which communities and courts join efforts to find the right families for children in the foster care system. Let’s celebrate National Adoption Day as thousands of foster children are welcomed into their forever homes!

History of National Adoption Day

National Adoption Day is an effort to focus attention on the more than 125,000 children waiting to be adopted from foster care in the U.S. A coalition of national partners — the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, Alliance for Children’s Rights and Children’s Action Network — founded National Adoption Day.

The coalition, along with the Freddie Mac Foundation, encouraged seven cities in 2000 to open their courts on or around the Saturday before Thanksgiving to finalize and celebrate adoptions from foster care.

Michael Nash, a former presiding judge of Los Angeles County’s Juvenile Court, inspired the first National Adoption Day with his innovative efforts. Nash opened the court on Saturdays, engaged the volunteer efforts of court personnel, and finalized adoptions to reduce the backlog of one of the busiest courts in the nation.

Today policymakers, practitioners and advocates collaborate to plan these annual, one-day events in 400 U.S. cities. To date the dreams of 75,000 children in foster care have come true as part of National Adoption Day events.

Approximately 2 million Americans are adopted — with about 150,000 adoptions happening each year, including about 50,000 through foster-care. U.S. adoptions may be either domestic or international. Domestic adoptions can be arranged either through a state agency, an adoption agency, or independently.

The manatee is a glorious creature, peaceful and patient, happily grazing on the broad variety of foods that exist within their aquatic home. They are a popular and well loved feature of the places they inhabit, serving as a sort of mascot for visitors and serving as a great draw for tourists. However, manatee aren’t the only creatures that love and adore the water, and they often find themselves in danger from their human fans, unable to move out of the way of the speedboats. Manatee Awareness Month reminds us that we aren’t the only creature in our watery play spaces.

History of Manatee Awareness Month

Manatee really are just wonderfully gentle creatures, but they aren’t at all quick, and certainly not quick enough to avoid the speedboats that often share their homes. Our use of the watery environments they live in leads to all sorts of interactions that are less than optimal to a happy manatee. The speedboat propellers often chew up their backs and cause grievous harm, and even those who appreciate them and try to keep them safe can bring them harm.

Feeding manatees, petting them, and even trying to ride them are all things that happen from overzealous tourists, but these can disrupt the natural day to day life of the manatee and impact their ability to survive. Manatee Awareness Month works to spread the news about these wonderful creatures and how to live side by side with them without bringing them harm or otherwise leading to their already endangered status becoming worse. After all, a future without manatee is a sad future indeed.

How to celebrate Manatee Awareness Month

Manatee Awareness Day is best spent showing your love and appreciation of the gentle sea cow, the manatee. If you live in a place where manatee inhabit the local waters, then go out and help educate people on how to interact with them.

Few people truly wish to bring them harm, but these large and friendly creatures often attract the well-meaning, help them know how to truly support the manatee.

If you live far from these gentle beauties, then you can learn on the internet, study in your local library, or even work to collect money to donate to those organizations that work to protect them.

History of Peanut Butter Month

You can’t talk about the history of Peanut Butter Month without talking about the history of peanut butter, and by extension, peanuts. Peanuts are a legume that originates in South America, and has been domesticated for 7600 years. Can’t be surprised that a little legume (not a nut!) that’s been around for so long has proven to be so incredibly popular the world round.

While the origins of peanut butter can be traced back to the Aztecs and Incans, the modern history of it starts in 1884, when it was patented by a chemist by the name of Edson. His whole purpose in developing it was to ensure that those who had issue chewing hard foods would be able to have a delicious way to get the nutrition they needed.

Since then they’ve exploded onto the culinary scene in every possible permutation, and can be found in some variation in some form in every meal. In 1995 Peanut Butter Lovers month came into existence and has been celebrated ever since in a month-long peanut buttery bacchanal!

How to Celebrate Peanut Butter Lovers Month

Considering how flexible peanut butter is as an ingredient, Peanut Butter Lovers Month is your opportunity to start putting more of this fantastic legume into your meals. Every day you can add in one peanut butter themed meal into your diet. Whether it’s a simple Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwich for lunch, or a savory and delicious pad thai, there’s tons of ways for you to incorporate it.

Perhaps the best way to make this a fun and social event, is to get friends and family together every week with their best and most creative peanut butter recipes. You’d be amazed at exactly what you can come up with, and just how many different types of meals there are that it can be included in.

“I don’t have children, but I have 17 nieces and nephews, and they more than makeup for anything that I can do. I have a stepdaughter, and I adore her to pieces, and I think about adoption. There are so many kids at different ages and stages that need families.” ~ Lauren Velez

Adoption Month is a month dedicated to bringing awareness to adoption and the children in need of homes and families. It’s a national holiday that aims at bringing good into the world by putting children first and aims to try and bring families together. If you want to learn more about this unique holiday, read more to learn about its history and see how you can participate in its celebration.

History of Adoption Month

Also called Adoption Awareness Month, it began in 1976 when Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis announced an Adoption Week to promote the need for families to adopt children in foster care. From there, then holiday became official under the presidency of Ronald Reagan in 1984. A few years later, in 1995, President Clinton proclaimed that Adoption Week should be changed to a month instead of a week because of the pressing need for adoptive families to take part in adopting children. From there, President Clinton expanded the adoption process by allowing families to use the internet as a resource for adoption.

Adoption Month became a national holiday for people to take part in. Current officials and candidates generally support this effort, and since then, Adoption Month has been proven to be somewhat successful. Since 2014, roughly 50,000 children have been adopted each year with the average age being about 7 years old. However, more statistics state that while 81.5 million Americans have considered adoption, about 23,000 children age out of foster care without finding a family. While more research is still in the process as each year passes, adoption is an important decision to make in a person’s life and should always consider all of the factors at play.

How to Celebrate Adoption Month

If you or a friend is considering adoption, then take research into all the factors associated with the adoption process, the child you want, and what it would cost to take care of the child. If you are ready for this important life decision, then talk with your local adoption center and see how you can get started. Take some time to research what the adoption process is like and see how you can change a child’s life forever. One of the best ways you can spread awareness of this holiday is by sharing it on social media so all of your friends and family members can know what day it is by using the hashtag #adoptionmonth.

They’re your best friend on almost any day, they work tirelessly to keep you in communication with friends and family, connected with work and the goings-on in the world around you. Sometimes they need a little love, and sometimes they need to be recognized as the individuals they are. Just like your cars, your PC has a personality all its own, and just like your car, it deserves a name of its own. Name Your PC Day is your opportunity to stop putting that off and finally christen your PC once and for all.

History of Name Your PC Day

The History of Name Your PC Day is as old as any object we’ve ever owned and named, whether it’s the first sword that had a name carved into it, or a ship that was christened with a broken bottle of champagne. We live alongside these every day, whether our lives depend on them in the literal sense, or they get us to work each day. These days our PC’s are as responsible for getting us to work as our cars once were, and so taking an opportunity to do that recognizes them for what they’ve done.

So what to name your digital companion? Well, there’s a lot of different ways to choose a name, some of them based on what your PC is designed to do. Got yourself a computer primarily used for research and writing, a grand beast that contains reams of unprinted stories, reports, and information? Perhaps you should name your PC “Alexandria”. Is it a repository of gaming power, prepped and primed like a race-car tuned to take the best advantage of every digital pathway it races down? Then, by all means, name it something like “Rocket” or perhaps something as grand as “Excalibur”. Name Your PC Day is your chance to break out your creativity and figure out what to call your favorite digital vehicle.

How to celebrate Name Your PC Day

Name Your PC Day is celebrated by naming your PC, of course! Spend some time and think about it, ask around and talk to your friends, it never hurts to poll those who live in and around you. Be careful about asking your partner, though, they might imply you should name it something that indicates it’s your other lover. One supposes it would be hard to go wrong with a gender neutral name like “Roxanne” in that case, now would it?

FAQs National Epilepsy Awareness Month 2021

National Epilepsy Awareness Month FAQs

What month is Epilepsy Awareness Month?

November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month.

Why is purple the color of epilepsy?

Because in order to help prevent seizures, individuals need to be able to relax the brain and nervous system. Linalool, the terpene most prominent in lavender, has that effect, which is why lavender (or purple) is the official color of epilepsy.

Is having epilepsy a disability?

While many of the individuals who suffer from epilepsy may be able to “control” their seizures, or don’t consider themselves disabled, epilepsy is covered under the Equality Act.

What color ribbon is for seizures?

Lavender, or purple, is the international color recognized for those who suffer from epilepsy.

What is National Epilepsy Awareness Month

National Epilepsy Awareness Month in November is an annual event that teaches people about epilepsy’s causes and symptoms. One in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy at some point during their lifetime. Epilepsy is one of the least understood of all the neurological diseases, yet it is the fourth most common. During this month, many organizations join together to provide information about prevention, treatment, research, and resources to fight epilepsy.

History

Epilepsy, unfortunately, has a long history of misunderstanding and stigmatism. Evidence of individuals suffering epilepsy in ancient history attributed it to spiritual or demonic possession. In fact, Hippocrates, the great Roman medical practitioner, shunned the notion that it was a supernatural phenomena and believed that it derived from the brain, had hereditary aspects, and that how it presented itself in childhood also determined how it affected the rest of the individual’s life.

Unfortunately, Hippocrates wasn’t believed until well into the 17th century, when the notion that it wasn’t demonic or spiritual possession finally subsided. But, the stigma associated with it continues to this day. One of the goals of National Epilepsy Awareness Month is to separate the disease from its historical and false reputations. Many countries still believe that it’s a sign of spiritual possession and, until 1980, individuals suffering from epilepsy weren’t allowed to marry in the United States.

5 Things You Never Knew About Epilepsy

  1. Anyone can have a seizure

People with epilepsy are not the only ones to suffer seizures; your risk may increase if you have high fever, low blood sugar, are undergoing drug or alcohol withdrawal — or even if you're experiencing a concussion following head trauma.

  2. It might be random

Two-thirds of people who suffer from epilepsy have no specific cause for their condition.

  3. Vincent Van Gogh may have had seizures

Art and medical historians speculate that Van Gogh's use of yellow in his paintings resulted from xanthopsia, a condition where the sufferer sees life through a yellow filter. Xanthopsia was a side effect of digitales, a medication used to treat epilepsy.

  4. It's a myth that you can swallow your tongue during a seizure

When someone has a seizure, carefully roll them on their side because if you try to put something in their mouth during a seizure, the person can injure their jaw, chip teeth or damage their gums.

  5. It can be fatal

People with epilepsy who fall, lose consciousness, or have lengthy successions of seizures can die.
